Other words for accountability are; answerability, blameworthiness, liability, responsibility. It is doing what you say you will do and being completely responsible for every of your actions and inactions. The Greek word for accountability is əˌkountəˈbilitē which also means to reckon, to report, to explain or justify something.
Accountability is extremely important to the growth of any organisation. It ensures that everyone involved in a shared purpose is entirely committed to it. It checks and balances actions and in-actions in order to maintain focus and high standards.
A successful goal requires not only a good and working framework but also a system of accountability that motivates and sustains team members. There will always be moments of distractions towards a set goal whether as individuals or as a team. Accountability will ensure that the moment is identified and promptly addressed so that it does not develop into passive responses from the rest of the team and build a toxic environment which can compromise the entire project. Christianity notwithstanding.
The body of Christ is a community with a common goal that every member is expected to adhere. The goal of our FATHER from the beginning was to create a royalty (Exodus 19:6, 1Peter 2:9) who will replicate His kingdom here on earth, which we have consistently faulted because of our resistance to His voice within us (Romans 8:11).
Being accountable indicates that we would be commitment this goal, and we would be responsible for our actions. It means we would have like minded people who would love and care enough to demand that our actions align with the goal. It also means we would be brave enough to accept corrections and not use flimsy excuses to disregard them. It means we would at some points let His rod and staff guide and comfort us. We would have God’s hands of shepherding through the loving counselling of his word and the stern warning of the legal system to interfere in our privacies and keep us on track.
Sins thrive in secrecy. This is why the Bible encourages us to confess our sins to one another James 5:16, to show how closely alike we are to each other and gain comfort and strength through the process. We sometimes get too preoccupied to see our own sins quite as big and dangerous as they are. This is why we need one another's relationships. 1 John 1:3 We each need that physical support system that inspires and exemplifies selfless love in our services to God and to one another. This genuine partnership can be a tool for God to hold us accountable to Him.
Are you a Christian who sees another brother wallowing in self destructive conduct but afraid to hold him accountable? Do you feel too defeated to accept brotherly accountability? Are you one that God can trust to model accountability for your fellow Christian brothers and sisters?
Reflect on these things…
